September Evening

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

I took a walk this beautiful pre-autumn evening…

The twilight sky was dark blue with a fading pink-purple curtain falling slowly over the last day of September. Even through my ipod, I could hear the tree frogs and the crickets chirping their farewells to summer.

It has happened so fast… again.

It reminds me of the Joni Mitchell song: “The Circle Game”:

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
Folks say “Take your time, it won’t be long now
‘Til you drag your feet to slow the circles down

I am sad and yet at peace with the brevity of this life. I have much to be thankful for- a beautiful woman who is my life partner, three godly, alive, sweet, sensitive daughters.
A son-in-law who loves God, life, and my daughter.

Rita and I have people who love us, who love the music and ministry that the Lord has given through us…We have friends that are safe places- I must confess that I have been blessed.

Godrest and Godspeed,
David Baroni

Hear These Songs Again… For the First Time

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Music has a built-in gift of memory. When we hear certain songs, we remember where we were the first time we heard them.

New music, inspired by the Holy Spirit has a built-in gift to propel us (to borrow the words of my friend Bob Sorge).

These two principles, remembering and encouraging us on in God are two of the reasons I am so excited about the release of

SONGPAINTERS: FAVORITE HYMNS INSTRUMENTAL.

My friend Nick Coetzee (from South Africa) and I created these arrangements at Rain Music Studios in Tampa Florida. Sometimes he would play part of a song on keyboard and I would play the rest- we experimented with authentic African percussion, Nick has a great touch on the classical guitar, and we felt the Presence of God as we recorded this CD.

The arrangements of these well-loved hymns are fresh and creative- yet leaving the melodies virtually intact. To listen to a sample, simply log on to www.davidbaroni.com

You will automatically hear a portion of the hymn “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”. If you like what you hear, just go to the online store to order. Click on CD’s on the top left of the home page and take it from there.

Pulse

Sept. 9th 2006

Pulse
I have tried to keep the sadness at bay
Until I let it in
Like a long lost friend
Like the waves that break
With a healing ache
I let it out again

I have trembled like the last leaf on a barren limb
Until the winter wind
Blows me away again
And I tumble down
To December ground
To find I’m not alone

Life is simple just to live
No questions asked no answers needed
But my restless heart can’t seem to stay
Content for very long
But peace is here in spite of all I do or do not do
Through the changing of the seasons
And the silence is a song
And my face is growing older in the mirror now
Didn’t take so long
How the years have flown
And the dreams that I have clung to
Some have been fulfilled
Turned to memories
Others never will
But I’d rather feel it all than not feel at all
Take the laughter and the crying
And the Living and the Dying
And the dancing and the laying down to rest
Smiling at my lover and my children and my God
I must confess
I have been blessed

Creative, sparkling arrangements of timeless hymns, The Songpainters- David Baroni and Nick Coetzee have brought their considerable musical skills to bear on these favorite hymns.
The Songpainters are David Baroni and Nick Coetzee. These guys have been making music for a long time- David from his youth growing up in Mississippi influenced by jazz, blues, rock and pop musicians; Nick from his native South Africa with a wonderful grasp of African rhythms and guitar work influenced by Sting, Phil Collins and others.
These guys are the real deal! They show inspired creativity in teaming up to produce Favorite Hymns Instrumental. One listen to a demo track and you can tell that this CD is a musical treat and a spiritual feast for the ears and heart.
The songs are timeless classics, the arrangements are tasteful, creative, fresh and sparkling. Keyboards interwoven with Nick’s nylon-stringed guitar, masterful and tasteful drums and percussion and David’s sensitive bass playing… you will play this CD again and again and eagerly await the next volume!

Jazz

Friday, September 1st, 2006

Just listened again to the Bill Evans trio. Good music, good jazz.

Good jazz reminds me of the Kingdom of God. Incredible freedom, creativity, hope, sense community and a hint of the intangible, a glimpse of the Invisible.

Some think jazz is rebellion, anarchy and musical independence gone amok- and indeed some experimental music given the “jazz” label seems to be just that. However the music I am speaking about has order and structure (just like a flexible, new wineskin.)

The musicians all feel the pulse of the beat: a one two a three four.. one a two three four… not so much played but there nonetheless. The chord structure is known and adhered to, played but not in a rigid way. The soloist is free to soar with his or her individuality, given freedom within the song structure. The drummer and bassist are solid and play with a foundational unity, accompanied by the pianist’s left hand.

It is a thing of beauty to listen as the band soars then gets quiet, sometimes playing different rhythms and notes in a seemingly disconnected cacophony, but landing together on the “one” and continuing in the song as “One”.

Community is exemplified as the musicians listen to one another and the heartbeat of the song, volume and intensity rising and falling as the song leads the way. The individual maintains his or her identity, yet lays down his rights for the sake of the group, the sake of the Song.

In the Kingdom of God we have foundations and a structure (a flexible wineskin, the Word and Spirit of God), and within that ”chord structure and rhythm” we are given the freedom in Christ to be ourselves. Not to show off our individual skills, but to flow together, each contributing our unique part to better give expression to “The Song.”

The Kingdom of God is not anarchy, freedom at all costs. We are not supposed to “solo” through our lives in the name of Freedom. As the song needs chords, melody and rhythm, so we need each other. A jazz band is more than one instrument. Let’s listen to each other, follow the Pulse of the Holy Spirit, solo when our time comes and enjoy playing with each other… the wonderful jazz of the Kingdom of God!

Heard any good music lately? Played any good music lately?!
